I went out antiquing today and hit a small shop that I had never stopped at before. I asked the owner if he had any militaria, and he brought out this bayonet - A German WW I Butcher Blade. The scabbard was rough, with a good bit of surface rust, but the bayonet itself is in really nice shape - someone put a heavy coat of grease on it - I have removed some, but some of the brown stains can still be seen in my pictures. The bayonet was made by Deutsche Maschinenfabrik, and is dated 1916. The shop owner wanted $150, but I talked him down to $80. This is my first German Bayonet of the WW I period - how did I do?

Looks like a good one, and for $80, you did well! I also think it may have been a sawback bayonet that had it's spine filed down, though I'd wait for other responses. If it is a sawback you did real well, nice job man.

Indeed, it has been ground to remove the saw teeth. It is 'salty',
but $80 is a good price complete with scabbard.........

    !

Thanks very much for the comments - Steve I like your avatar - I don't have a U.S. belt buckle, but I did find a nice U.S. Cartridge Box plate with my metal detector.

You did real well for $80.
I have one as well (with sawteeth) that came from Duisburg in 1916.

You did well for that price... It's S98/05 nAS Abg. (Seitengewehr model 1898/1905 neuer Art mit Sagerucke Abgenommen)... Meaning Bayonet model 1898/1905 new model with sawback removed...
