Pickelhaube restoration. Advice needed!

Hi, look what some idiot did to this pickelhaube! Luckily, the liner and inside are intact. Any advice on how i can remove this silver and brass coloured paint?

Thats a shame, would a helmet in this condition hold any value?

Wow! Wonder what that person was thinking?!

As for removing the paint, I've heard of others using acetone to remove the red dye from the leather liners in Norwegian reissued German helmets.

I would, however, suggest posting this in the restoration section for more input before going that route.

As for value, it's there. Either in parts or to someone who has performed similar restorations.
