I'm afraid that this is a difficult topic. I have never seen anything authoritative regarding what is real and what isn't. There are many variations of the so-called fake badges. The trouble is that there seems to be no standard by which to verify the authenticity of a navy badge. One rarely sees period navy lots that include a wound badge that could be used as a template for judging other pieces. Most opinions that I have seen are based on gut feelings and prejudices due to someone having a like badge in their collection. I wish it were different, but that seems to be the current state of things.
