    Interesting.

There were three German U-Boats designated as U9, one each with the Imperial Navy, the Third-Reich-era Kriegsmarine and the FRG-era Bundesmarine.

Given the presence of the Reichskriegsflagge [Imperial War Flag], this button is obviously in some way connected to the Imperial-era U9. This was a rather famous boat that sunk 14 enemy ships, which included no less than 3 British cruisers sunk within just one hour. *)

Surely, individual boats did not have special uniform buttons. Maybe this is some kind of patriotic souvenir item or a button for a naval veterans' organization composed of former crewmen and/or named in honor of the sub?

    (Just my theory.)

I agree with all the previous posts and the only suggestion I have to add is that it might be a blazer button, though I'm not sure that Germans wear blazers, which I think are more British and American. That would be in keeping with HPL2008's opinion that it's a patriotic thing. Where did you find it? Dwight
