I can't find it in my German medals book... and the quality looks poor for a german award... I will let the others chime in.
Pretty sure this is for one of the many Veterans associations.

Hi Greg
That's what I'm thinking, as Lowboy pointed out, the quality of the item isn't up there with a regular medal, so to speak. I tried googling combinations of DKFA but to no avail. I thought it may be for Deutscher Kriegs something. I also tried googling various combinations of F W V St (Friedrich Wilhelm?) but also no luck. It's been bugging me for years!
I've seen that KWVST lettering on other pieces. I don't remember what it stands for.
The red, white, black ribbon is common on veterans medals.
I typically don't give vets medals a second look so I can't be much help with this one.
Hopefully someone with more experience than me will take a look.

Okay, this may be a stretch, could it be F V St W, which may refer to St. With? I have a VDA donation badge from the collection called Städtwappen auslandsdeutscher Städte (Town coats of arms of German expatriate towns), and one of them is for St. Vith. I also have two more VDA donation badges from another collection called Wappen deutscher Grenzstädte (Coat of arms from German frontier towns). I'm wondering if these could be related to the St.V on the piece? I am going right out on the ledge here
