    Default ww1 erkennungmarke.

    hi guys.
i have had this disc for years
i cant get a image to post its a bit faint.
    it says.
    alfred schiewe
    berlin thurmst 58
    4 . 5 . 96
    11 . ers . batl . gren . r . 3
    2 . rekr . dep . 5129
    gren . rgt . 3 . 8 komp .
    1437.
the last line and number have been stamped a lot deeper
    like it was done later.
what has thrown me is the grenader part
    i thought that was a ww2 thing.
    any help would be appreceated.
    thanks

    Tony,

IMHO it stands for 'REKRUTEN DEPOT' and the number would be the number assigned to the soldier while in that unit (11 . ers . batl . gren . r . 3, 2 . rekr . dep . 5129), when he went to this unit; gren . rgt . 3 . 8 komp, he was assigned the number 1437.

PS, On your thoughts that grenadier was a WWII designation? Grenadier goes way back further than WWI. I added a photo of one of my erkennungmarke that has a simular rekruten depot mark.
