It is British - the markings are for 'Joseph Rogers & Sons',
and it's likely older than WWI - maybe late 1890's
    to early 1900's.

Your mate likely thinks it's WWI German because
    it shows a Maltese cross.

    It's a very nice knife.........

    Steve.

thanks for the quick reply ! your right it was the maltese cross that made him think german, is it still a military issue ?,
    thanks again, John.

ps: thanks to your lead I googled and found the mark is actually joseph Rodgers and sons, Sheffield !, many thanks.

No, I do not believe it's an 'issue' piece, but no reason
it couldn't have been carried/used in WWI, IMO.........

    Good question John.

I'd ask him what he wants for it, especially since he now knows
it's not WWI German. Condition matters, and it is not all that
great. If he's interested, tell him not to go too high.
    I'd be guessing at 30 to 50 Pounds ?

It's likely worth more than that, and little TLC would make
it look a whole lot better.........
