I have a WW1 Mauser Gewehr 98 Rifle with the cleaning rod. My question is what did they screw the cleaning rod into to clean the bore? I understand that in WW2 they used a chain with a handle, but what did they used in WW1.

The rods from 3 rifles were screwed together.
JEDEM DAS SEINE
Make sense, but was there a handle issued to one in three rifles ? I don't think that I have ever seen a handle ?
Nasically the rod was intended for chamber cleaning by the individual. There were pull through type strings issued that were intended to do the bore. The buddy system as noted by connecting rods would work in a pinch. Waffenmeisters were issued stout bore length rods for more thorough clenaing and bore obstruction removal. In all the german soldier of that period was expected to do with the pull through.
