WW1 Prussian Belt

Hi everyone, just got this Prussian Belt, the leather work dated 1914 and 1915. The buckle has obviously been repaired but looks contemporary. It is unmarked. The Leather is nicely marked with a Hamburg Maker and stamped for 79th Infantry. Any comments welcome. Doug

a very interesting belt for two reasons : the first one because it is not made in the usual manner for ww1, that is to say with the inner side of the leather facing the outside . This may suggest a private purchase item which was nevertheless put into regular service as shown by the acceptance markings found on it, because of the big need of military goods in late 1914 and early 1915 due to the large losses of the beginning of the war

The second reason is the name of the "maker", Benny Spiro of Hamburg, a well known arms dealer of the period who was selling weapons to the irish revolution at the time

I have in my collection a prussian 1895 buckle with its leather tab marked "Benny Spiro Hamburg 1914", it features an interesting difference with the standard buckles in that the roundel is made of brass instead of the standard nickel silver

The nominal is rough side out for enlisted reverse for officers men of rank polished grunts just oiled their gear.
