WWI german vest?

I bought a huge military lot, and I found this vest or what.
Could you help me to find out what it is?

It is more than likely some form of protective garment which would be slipped over the top of a shirt or jacket. But in truth it could be from almost any period of the 20th century. What makes you think that it is WW1 ?

Thank you! In hand the materials feels/looks old fashioned. And I've seen this kind of canvas and straps on WWI german stuff. Otherwise it came with a huge military antiques lot with so many specialities.
