It's not quiet soviet. I know nothing of Imperial badges, but I know for sure that there are a lot of hi-class fakes(including museum copies made in 90s by S.P. museum intself ) on the market. Hope it helps a little.

IMO - It is a reproduction Tsarist era Russian Railways badge.

A Repro? Well, that's disappointing. Would it be too much to ask how one can tell a repro, or does it take years to know what to look for?

I provided my opinion from many years of experience. However, I am no expert and could be gravely mistaken.

In any case, I am skeptical of the screwplate and the wire tangs that affix the second piece of the badge.

Perhaps you should try asking our Russian associates on one of their forums for further opinions.

    Try this one: russiamilitaria.ru

There is a section devoted to the Imperial genre where many knowledgeable collectors participate. If they are unable to assist you there, be assured that they are able direct you further.

Hi Ritchie, did the German Railways have the winged wheeled badge first, or the Russians?
