    A photo of the back might help.

    Backmarks....manufacturer, but the style of shank used can also help date a button.

    This looks quite old, maybe Russian as you suggest, or Bulgarian or Serbian.

    Let's see what the experts say.

    A picture of the back would help, however buttons could be made elsewere.
    For example the button's for the Moscow metro personal were made in Antwerp/Belgium.

    Interesting, Stuka. I didn't know that, but everything about the Moscow Metro is super/top of the line (as long as the Chechens leave it alone).

    not getting any wiser form thise pic, thanks anyway for the effort.
    There are some fora of people searching with metal detectors who might help you; buttons and coins are the most discussed finds.
