    Hi Snoman,

It looks to me to be a S.H.u.Co design badge from one of the Idar-Oberstein region makers. It's unmarked so it may be one of several producers, known or unknown, but i'll leave the hard bit to fischer or Stewy.

That does appear to be zinc pest. The way I deal with it is to pick/scrape off as much as I can using a long thorn off a bush, that way no scratchee metal (usually Blackthorn, the thing they make Sloe Gin from) but as you're Stateside I guess a cactus spine or summat will do... Then give it the old Vaseline treatment and you're good to go.

    Regards, Ned.

A 4 vein SHuCo for me. Some zinc pest, but if you treat it as Ned says. It'll stay nice. Stewy

A typical SHuCo trait is the left opening catch. Stewy

I agree with Ned, Harry and Stewy's analysis and recommendations...

ShuCo Design - 4 vein variation.

I would also use the Vaseline treatment to stop any further decay. Here is my method.

First, apply a light coating of Vaseline over the entire badge. Let it sit for a couple of days.
After this, wash the badge using Ivory soap and a soft bristle toothbrush.
Dry the badge completely using a hair dryer.

Remember humidity (moisture) can ruin these zinc badges; proper storage is the key!

    Best Regards, fischer
