I think it's a badge known as the 'Vienna Design Soft Scoop' badge, a semi hollow zinc badge with a sheet metal hinge and circular catch plate. Looks good to me, but better wait for Stewy, fischer or schwelch to give the definitive answer.
'I do not think we can hope for any better thing now.
We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker of course, and the end cannot be far.
It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more. R. SCOTT.
Last Entry - For God's sake look after our people.'

In memory of Capt. Robert Falcon Scott, Edward Wilson, Henry Bowers, Lawrence Oates and Edgar Evans. South Pole Expedition, 30th March 1912.

    Hello

I also agree with Ned's analysis; an original unknown example belonging to the Vienna Design family of Infanterie Sturmabzeichen's.

This sheet metal hinge example can also be found with a rectangular shaped catch plate as well.

BTW you have some white, powdery residue going on around the catch area along with some green verdigris.

If the badge were mine, I would delicately brush that area down with a soft tooth brush and give the badge a light coating of Vaseline.
Include the front areas as well; especially the berry band and k98k stock.
After a day or two, I would carefully wash the Vaseline off with Ivory soap and water and dry the badge completely with a hairdryer.
Dry the hinge, pin and catch areas with the dryer completely to avoid rusting.

Just remember to approach this with a soft hand.

Storage is also important and high humidity or damp areas will ruin zinc badges.
Keep it dry in a protected place and you will enjoy this beauty for years.

    Best Regards, fischer

    PS.
Here is a before and after pic of a Souval Packet Set I have that came with some zinc pest.
I used this technique with the goal of avoiding further pitting to the badge.
