Perhaps it was a just a trendy thing to do? I could see how it would get annoying to hear your assault badge clanging against your wound badge all day.

I have a number of ISA we have found at Narva and one from Stalingrad all with similar damage i think it was just a common type of combat damage to this particular badge.
