Strange Helmet like thingamabob??

I've had this for a while now, but cannot for the life of me figure out what it's supposed to be for. It represents an incomplete British helmet with the Royal Lancaster Regt insignia.
If not mistaken this type of insignia was used between 1881-1901.

It measures 80mm high and at the open base it measures 75 x 54mm. It appears to be a lid of sorts?? Has anyone ever seen one before?

I would be most grateful if some-one could please tell me what exactly I have here. Thank you for looking.

Sorry I can't help you for certain Tom. Looks really nice and a lid for a salt or other mess hall table ware would be my guess, but that is only a guess.

Actually it is a training suppository for the SAS. If they can handle having that stuck up their butt they are mean enough to do anything.
