Default 6/7th Bn RWF flag and associated items

A good score for me and waiting for them to arrive.

An original flag for the 6/7th Bn of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, it came from someone else had it directly from the former owners family, or so it is said and the story fits as it all came from N Wales.

Also included is his mess dress uniform of mess jacket, waistcoat and trousers, as well as a framed picture of the presentation of new colours by the Queen in Cardiff Castle. The mess dress is 1951 dated.

Along with the above is also his forage cap, with braid for a Colonel, maker marked to pre 1953 and with regimental buttons to the RWF. i can only find him as a Major so far, S.Metcalfe.

Interestingly from vol VI of the regimental records he was a WOI earlier in his career with a long service MSM, and is last listed as a major and adjutant of the 2nd Caernarvonshire home guard Bn. from 1952 to 1957. Why he has the flag of the 6/7th Bn (TA) is not known, though they disbanded in 1967 and their colours were handed over to a cadre at that time.

I only have some pics for now until it all arrives in a few days.

Thanks Matt for taking an interest.

I did some more research on Sam Metclafe he is mentioned a few times in the Regimental history for WWII, RED DRAGON The Story of the Royal Welch Fusiliers 1919-1945 by Lt.Cmn Kemp and J Graves.

He is mentioned on p97 where it is stated (march 1942)

......It was also at Selkirk that the battilion (2/RWF) said goodbye to its outstanding Regimental Sergeant-Major. Mr. Metclafe left to become a quartermaster, and to him the battalion owed a great debt of gratitude for his unfailing and superb help and skill.....

    p371/2

Early in 1942 Lt S. Metcalfe arrived as QM (with 70/RWF, young soldiers).....the whole place buzzed with cheerful activity and Lt. Metcalfe, to use his own expression, was seen daily "flying through life".....the bn sports organized by Metcalfe on peace time lines.....(When the Bn was disbanded 26 Aug 1942)...and on Sept 17th the first draft lest for 8th Bn. RWF.

Not sure what happened to him next as the regimental history for WWII is very patchy on detail and often very weak and a new more fuller expanded version is currently being written. I might be able to find more in the Gazette as the previous search I undertook was limited to 1950 on.

Well done on finding a great grouping Jerry! Looks like Hon Major Metcalfe had a long and interesting military career, and certainly a group of items well worth researching. Leon.

Indeed Leon, if he was a well respected RWM by early 1942, how long had he been in service before that I wonder.

I am still trying to find his end of career date or if he is still alive, though I assume he has passed away if his family sold these items of his.

The group arrived today, well pleased I am. The flag is much bigger than I expected as is the framed picture.

however one thing did not almost surprise me which is the cap is not named to Major Metcalfe as it is to a higher rank than I could find for him and is indeed named to P.Williams-Jones who I have yet to research. This is not a problem and makes the group more interesting. There are two pairs of officer breeches included in the lot, one with thin red stripe and the other with thick red stripe down the legs, the former named to Major Metcalf, the latter with no name in them that I have yet to find. the mess jacket and waistcoat are also so as I can see without a name in them and again appear to be for a full Colonel and matches the rank on the forage cap. The cap is a pre 1953 example as it is maker marked hatters to the King, Herbert Johnson. It is in lovely condition and from the Queens crown badge he must have continued in service after 1953. It has RWF regimental buttons, very very nice.

Between 1960 to 1966 Lt. P. Williams-Jones is listed as being on the roll of C Company (Conwy, Bethesda) of 6/& RWF (TA).

Between 1967 & 1969 Major P. Williams-Jones was Company commander of C company (Bangor) of 6/7 Bn RWF (TA) which accounts for him having the colours in his possession as they are recorded in the regimental historyas being placed in the care of a small cadre from the Bn.

Williams-Jones is also listed as company commander, D company RWF, the Welsh Volunteers 1969 - 1971.

During the 70's Major Williams-Jones was commanding officer, D company the 3rd Volunteer Bn RWF TA and was senior major of the Bn.

P Williams-Jones is listed as Acting/Colonel TD ACF as commanding officer of Gwynedd ACF 1986-87 and then of 6th Cadet Bn 1987-91.
