Prior to 1883 the crown was the rank badge for a Captain and only after that date did it become that of a Major.

As we are aware embroidered crowns were worn on the sleeves of British Army Majors over the period 1902-1920. (General Pattern).

This style was being phased out by 1917.
There was also a Scottish version that differed from the General Pattern

Very nice Dave, I'd love to add a cuff rank tunic to my collection. I would have to disagree with you about the date though, as the "wind up" tunic with shoulder rank insignia was already being worn by mid 1915 for frontline use, so cuff rank was strictly speaking being phased out earlier than you suggest, though some of the regiments were resistant to that, hence the term "wind up" tunic.

    Hi Jerry,
I think the change was implemented due to the "obvious" nature of the cuff rank insignia. They stood out far to much.
I believe the shoulder rank system was given official sanction in 1917 as an optional alternative but was worn earlier than this date by Field officers on the front line, being made permanent in 1920, when the cuff rank (General Pattern) was finally abolished.
Not my Tunic mate only an example, I wish I was though.

    Cheers

    Dave
