Re: Aussie WW2 Metal Dog Tags
Hi René, I love the way you can research Aussie servicemen & women. If only were could do that with their British counterparts.
Dog tags are great being such personal items.
Cheers, Ade.

As you may have seen on the link provided? Ebell belonged to 2/24th Battalion, 9th Division, on discharge.
Here's a little history of the 2/24th

i might be wrong but my fathers dog tag were a dense pressed carboard material,as a result it was hard to identify australian war dead in the pacific eg singapore, the military may have changed dog tags to metal later on,or some one did it themselve,if some could clarify

Hi Mike, welcome to the forum!
Early tags were indeed of the British pattern and were made of compressed fibreboard.
Cheers, Ade.

G'day lithgow
I do believe we did make them also in leather, I don't have a set but I have seen them before (a very long time ago). Love to see your set.

Hi yes the early Australian tags (pre 1942) were made from compressed fibre the same as was issued to the british but as stated they would rot away in the tropics so the stainless steel were brought in, I will dig some of mine out and show some pics
