Hi guys. Could anyone tell me the date of the badge and if the 'AUSTRALIA' added at a later date. The pin on the back definitely looks like a repair job using a safety pin. Quite well done though. Thanks, Mark.

For me it looks like a WW2 issue.
In my opinion is the Australia tag indeed added at a later date.
The safety pin wasn't there originally.
There were two O shaped rings on it, like the one on yours.
They fixed it onto a slauch hat by using split pin.
Maybe your badge is later modified for veterans use to pin it on a costume.

    Hello there,

This is a "Sweetheart" type of badge. It is made from a collar Rising Sun badge and an "Australia" shoulder badge soldered together. I can not say if it is WW1 or WW2 sorry.

Agree and it looks to be maker marked K G Luke & Co. so post early 1920's I think, so probably WWII. I have seen a few of these conversions to "sweetheart" badges, very nice.

Thank you all for the info. I wonder if there are types of sweetheart badges from all armies. Anyway, lets hope the giver of this one returned to his sweetheart.

    Hi Mark,
Def. a sweetheart badge made from collar and shoulder insignia with a pin attached.
These are the normal attachment devices for Rising Suns. The large example is a hat badge, the smaller is collar insignia.

A nice sweetheart badge none the less.
