    It may be a US army WW1 unassigned officers collar badge.The format is very similar to the WWW2 version.The only difference appears to be the spokes.

    Unfortunately, the 'Image Shack' host reduces the photo when I click on it,
    instead of enlarging it !

    I do see what appears to be an eye on that 'snake', but I believe it is just
    a part of the ribbon that curls around the American Eagle.........!

    i agree it could be a ribbon but im seeing a snake with no eye because the mouth is open tongue out looking like its giving a shrill scream (after getting bitten)
