I was always under the impression tht the non enamelled AIC badges were worn by OR's Sgt and below.

I always thought it was a ease of war time production inspired change post 1942 but you may be right on that Luke. Worth some looking in to.
Maybe this thread could also be a good place to pose any questions relating to the history and use of WW2 Australian insignia. We may all learn something new or clear something up.
I have one... Was the rank of 2nd Lieutenant dropped by the Australian Army (AIF and Militia) early in WW2 and later reinstated in the 1950's.?

believe it or not i only just saved his uniform from being thrown out when my parents shifted house. I would have been devastated if it was lost

I think you saved an important part of your families heritage mate. Something to be treasured and passed on to the grand kids.

Militia corps & unit badges weren't worn post 1942 as everyone wore the General service badge and colour patches were used to distinguish the units. I will have a look at Cossums in a sec and see what it says about the non enamelled AIC badges.

As for the 2nd Lt rank I don't think it was actually dropped I think It was more of a case of It just never existed within the AIF but It was still used by the militia. Although I have seen a couple of AIF tunics with this rank, my only explanation is that If a 2nd Lt was serving within the Militia and transfered to AIF they would keep the rank until promoted.

Yep sure are!! When i collected these they used to be around $2 each and $10 or so for the good stuff... Now since the invention of ebay and the WWW the price has gone up 10 fold.

The 2/48th has always been a hard unit to collect to because of Diver Derrick. I think we have already talked about this a couple of years back 2 of my great uncles were in the 2/48th. I'd really like to get a hold of their early patch too.
