Woww~ Fantastic ..

Back in the 1960s we used to be able to simply order these tunics through mail order disposals and they were genuine Militray.. no repop &^*&@ !

Then in the 1970s ~ I hung out with ( what is now considered Bad Dude Bikies) and we used to use / wear Military great coats complete with standard Batt buttons ~ (Mine had medical corp buttons) ~ Mine cost me $7 !

Man! What ever happened to those fantastic real deals I bought!

So that's what happened to all the good WW2 Australian made single breasted Great Coats
They are quite rare and expensive things these day's, I feel lucky to have one only in my collection.

I was under the impression that the militia battalions during the 1920s to 1940s had no direct connection to the AIF units of the same number.

eg the 40th Bn (Derwent Regiment) had no direct connection to the 40th Bn AIF but was instead related to the pre WW1 Derwent Regiment which was also a militia unit. The AIF battalions were formed only for hostilities.

I believe that the only link was that the militia units inherited the battle honours of the AIF unit otherwise there was no direct connection.

Buna/Paul Yes this is the one on Ebay a couple of weeks back. It was discribed as 2/40 but Hoffman only went over to the AIF (3rd Divi. AASC) from the Militia in 1945. It's certainly a 40th Battalion mini.
I paid "drug money" for this one as it had a tripple Tasmanian connection. Hoffman was from the Hobart area, 40th Derwent Battalion and T20 manufacturer. It just had to stay in Tassie under any circumstances. (I sacrificed my monthly Militaria coin for this one, no new 1930-42 Militia insignia for a little while )

Jack The 40th "Derwent Regiment" was a Tasmanian Militia Infantry Battalion with linage back to the WW1 40th Battalion. During WW2 it was part of York Force and garrisoned Darwin in the Northern Territory.It was during this period the Battalion transfered over to the AIF. In May '45 it was combined with the 12th battalion to form the 12/40th battalion and accepted the Japanese surrender of Timor 3 Oct '45 at Koepang as part of Timor Force which is a tad ironic as the 2/40th (The only fully Tasmanian raised 2rd AIF infantry Battalion in WW2) was captured there in Feb '42.

The designations/lineage is a bit confusing for me. It appears that WW2 infantry units could consist of.
1. original militia units,,, 2. units raised to become part of the AIF,,, 3. militia units given AIF status.

I read that if the militia units members volunteered for an AIF term of service .(75 percent of strength volunteering) they would become an AIF unit. The example that was given was the 24th Bn. AIF

that had to be tough to administer in a war.

I would recommend grabbing hold of Fesberg's "Lineage of the Australian Army" book - it gives a good account of the lineage of various battalions and regiments.

Now if I could only find an inexpensive copy of Keith Glydes book on colour patches.

Keith lives only two hours south of me,I have been in contact with him chasing one that may be laying around his place but no luck. They are bloody expensive thingo's these days.

I don't think he has any intentions of reprinting it at present due to working on other projects.

Yes mate I did ask the question but a reprint is not planned for the near future as you say.
It would sell for sure. Even a limited edition reprint would be a go'er .
Funny enough J.K.Cossum also lives in Hobart.
