Intriguing badge. You may need a specialist badge forum like the British and Commonwealth Military Badge Forum?
Let us know if you find out.

I have no idea what this is but I might make an educated guess as it were.
Although it likely has a military (specifically RM) connection I doubt it is military per se. More likely a souvenir or maybe a club / association badge. If it were a unit / qualification badge the symbolism would be definate even if a little nebulous rather than the generic nature of flag / crown / motto that we see here. The type of crown and the overall construction suggest any time from around WWI right up to 1953 but I would think the early part of that period is more likely.

It is an interesting item in its own right and I would love to know what it is but I think the best chance s if someone sees it and says "I know what that is"!

    Regards

PS The motto of Clan Donald is Per mare per terram which means the same.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing he cares more about than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature with no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

you are quite right and the clan McDonald badge also features the belt design too, but would a clan badge include the union flag ?, just my thoughts,
    all the best,

It is a lovely badge and I wish I could say what it is but sadly I cannot. I would agree that it probably dates to the earlier part of the period in which this type of crown was used. Many of the late Victorian badges included a belt surrounding the central area as part of the design which also helps support an early 20th century date for it.
