sweetheart pin question??

i was wondering where the term sweetheart pin came from and y they are called that

To the best of my understanding, sweet heart pins were given to "sweet hearts" aka girlfriends, wives, etc. to represent the branch of the service that their boyfriend or husband was serving in.

I may be way off... but this is what I thought.
