    American forces were not issued flags to carry in the field.
    I am pretty sure that the vast majority of flags from the WWII period were made of cotton.

    I knew the US Navy was still issuing wool bunting flags during and even after the War but I was getting conflicting evidence concerning the US Army. I am referring to HQ flags, Command Posts, etc.

    I really do not think it was common practice to fly flags in forward area combat zones. As far as rear area headquarters I imagine cotton would have been preferred. As far as the navy would be concerned you don't have to worry about moths at sea.
