Great thread, and a nice collection of early US Navy rating. It is interesting that
the design of the eagle and chevrons became pretty much 'standardised'
around 1900. Is there a reason for right or left facing eagles ?

Here is my only one. I do not know anything about it, except
it is smaller than normally seen - 2.5"w x 4.25"h.........

You have a great collection, Jason. Good thread, too. Here is my one lonely rate, an estate sale find that came with a cap.

    Steve,
The Seaman branch (I listed the ratings of the seaman branch above) wore there rating badges on the right sleeve. All the eagle's head face the same direction until the 1941 regulation change. With that change now the eagle's head would face to the wearer's front. I think before 1915 all rates(seaman branch and non seaman branch) were worn on right sleeve but not sure of that exact date.

I think that rating is a waves rating badge. Looks to me to be ww2.

I along with others think that the dates sewn on the backs of these rating badges are contract dates. Not the actually date made but contract date. I have found dates from 1937-1945. You can also find these with the maker sewn in.

Here's the dates that I have. Also some maker examples.

Take notice that this Torpedoman is post war and has sewn on chevrons(I think this one is late 40's very easly 50's.

Two more maker marks that you find are the C and Anchor markes. Not sure what maker the C is for but think the anchor may be for the naval tailor supply shop. You see the anchor in some of there tags in the uniforms.

In 1943 they had a test run of embroider chevrons. They are stamp on the back usually 1943.

Sometimes the sailor's didn't do everything by the regulation, so you will find examples of the rating badges facing the wrong way depending on the era. I have these two examples to show. Both on uniforms. Another reason could be the insignia is foreign made?
WW1 named uniform. He was a Electrician's Mate Chief and also a qualified radioman. The radioman rating badge didn't come out until the 1920's.
The rating by regulation should be facing the other direction.

The next uniform was made in 1945. He was in China and had the jumper and rating badge tailor made there. The rate is on the correct arm(right) because the BM rate is a seaman branch rate. But the head is facing the wrong direction.
