Greetings, I hope it is alright that I post here. I looked for a place to make an introduction post, but could not find one.
so I'll make a brief one here:
I am 21 and I live in Norway and have always been very interested in army/navy history.
I found this site when searching for an answer to a qeustion I will post further down.
A few years ago, I bought an old box of 'assorted randoms' at a yard sale for roughly 10$ When sifting through the various items of greater/lesser interest, I found the rating badge that I have posted a picture of below. At the time I had mostly 'studied' Norwegian army history and had not yet absorbed much information on navy history, much less American history. So I 'dismissed' it as a novelty item or similar, but I kept it around for a while until it got packed away when I moved to a new home.
About a year ago, I found it again, and with more knowledge regarding military and navy history I knew it was US Navy Rating badge. with the rate of Petty Officer 1st class and if I am not completely mistaken, it is from ca. 1940. But the symbol below the crow have me confused. I have searched and searched for any information on that specific symbol and I hope someone here can share their wisdom and tell me what is is.
(If I had to make a guess, I't say it is some form of engineering/machinist badge, based on the monkey-wrench. But the round object in the back is unknown to me. but by the looks of it, there is steam coming out of the sides, so maybe a boiler? Boiler Machinist?)
I have NO idea how it ended up in Norway, seeing as how it is American. Though I guess it might have been brought from overseas by a fledgeling collector?
I apologize for the poor quality of the picture, I had to take this with my phone.
Thanks in advance for any and all information and I am very sorry if this is the wrong place or if the thread is 'off limits' for newcomers.
Sincerely:
Eilert L. J.
