USAAF Bombadier Wings, Sweetheart Brooch?
Article about: Hi all. I picked this up as I really like the design of US air force wings. I am just wondering if, due to the size (approx 2 inches), this would make it a sweetheart item as I know the norm

These were sometimes worn in training and according to some, were also
the type worn in combat - known as 'shirt-size'. 3" wings were for
the dress uniform.
But yes, the 2" size are refered to as 'Sweetheart' wings. The pattern
you show is a typical 'Orber' design.........

Thanks. So they were officially worn on the uniform, but I guess they were handy to give to one's sweetheart?

I do not believe it was 'official' that they did this, although there is/was
a saying - 3" for show, 2" to go - They were likely sent home to
mothers, wives and girlfriends more often, hence the name
they are known as.........

Great information, i like the saying
-
I was under the assumption that the small wings were made to be worn on the shirts
