Thats very interesting, something I've never seen before.
Did Poland manufacture their own skulls? As it is a match for the German traditional badge.
You wouldn't have a photo of the reverse ?

Thanks for the updated and detailed information Krakow1.

Based on my original image how could you tell if the skull is legit , could we see the reverse of the skull?

I have asked Tony Zawadzki who is a MOD on Polish Forum for comment. He may have a picture of the back, I do not. The one You have shown is missing the silver tress around it...
Known example that sold at Desa Auction in Poland was 76x61 mm, tape around the border was metallic.

Nice. So my theory that I stated was possibly turned out to be actually be possible. I will have to say this; that specific skull that you showed (To OP) looks a bit strange compared to the SS Totenkopf, or even the German Totenkopf, so I was suspecting that due to it's strange manufacture it could not possibly be German. On the other hand, I suspect that the Polish may have very well just taken any extras they had from since when they were part of Germany(Prussia of sorts) and used them instead.

Further to Krakow1's post, the 'Death's Battery' (1st Battery of the 1st Motorized Artillery regiment of the 1st Polish Armoured Division) badges are being made using readily available Braunschweig Husaren Regiment Nr.17 Offiziers totenkopfs. Here are some selling now (with an image of one added for the record as these links will eventually die):

There is an ongoing debate whether the Braunschweig Husaren Totenkopf was ever even used for the badge. I could go on at length about this, but it would be straying off the topic of this thread. Suffice it to say, original badges are beyond rare. The only type I would personally accept into my collection, aside from any having rock solid provenance, is the bullion threaded version made in occupied Germany in 1945 for the unit while stationed there. These were produced by some German nuns hired by the
Poles. Also a very rare insignia:

    Thanks Tony

Always good to get clarification and details on what to look for in original examples.

Very interesting thread. Well done , guys.

I have never seen the Polish badge before but a few years ago, I spent
a fair amount of time looking for an original Brunswick skull. I eventually
gave up trying to find one that was the real deal.
