I thought I'd show everyone some US rank insignia from WWII,
- an incomplete study in itself, but I realized it would be easier to show
a few examples and then just describe some of the differences between
old and modern. Too many pics, not enough info !
WWII pieces are generally sterling and pin-back, with makers names
and sometimes their location, covering all branches of service,
Sometime in the late 40's or early 50's, manufacturers were instructed
to use alphanumeric code numbers : 1V, 9M, etc.
Later ( 50's/60's ) types have two numbers : D22, S21, 12C, etc.
These are typically 1/20th filled pieces which continue to this day,
and tend to be the clutch-back type, but pin-backs are still used.
There is a huge variety out there, some more common than others,
and there are probably cross-over eras, where all types were worn
at once. If requested, I can show more backs and fronts of any
individual pieces...........
