I thought I'd show everyone some US rank insignia from WWII,
    - an incomplete study in itself, but I realized it would be easier to show
a few examples and then just describe some of the differences between
old and modern. Too many pics, not enough info !

WWII pieces are generally sterling and pin-back, with makers names
and sometimes their location, covering all branches of service,
Sometime in the late 40's or early 50's, manufacturers were instructed
to use alphanumeric code numbers : 1V, 9M, etc.
    Later ( 50's/60's ) types have two numbers : D22, S21, 12C, etc.
These are typically 1/20th filled pieces which continue to this day,
and tend to be the clutch-back type, but pin-backs are still used.

There is a huge variety out there, some more common than others,
and there are probably cross-over eras, where all types were worn
at once. If requested, I can show more backs and fronts of any
    individual pieces...........

    Thanks for the comment !

I pick up pieces where and when I find them, shows, etc. including
WWI and modern pins of which there are several included in the tray as well.

I should point out that what I've mentioned above are only rough guidelines.
There are so many variables, and you kind of have to get a feel for the things
just as you might TR period stuff, except they haven't started faking this
    kind of insignia..........yet !

I think the "JR Gaunt, London" LT. Colonel pin is very rare.............
As is another by "William Link & Co." - probably WWI or 1920's.

"W 'Link' & Co." logo/anagram sterling Lt. Colonel.
A sterling WWII Colonel's War Eagle by "N.S.Meyer"
Modern "N.S. Meyer" clutchback Major with double shield logos.

    Plus others in group;
    Bottom left is "ROLLED GOLD"]
    and next to it "A.E.Co".
Bottom center is "ACID TEST" snowflake pattern.
2nd from right on bottom "MEYER METAL".
    Bottom right is "GEMSCO".
( Sorry the photos are fuzzy.....)
