Hi Doug,
it is a nice Italian Army visor cap mod. 1948, belonging to a "Sottotenente"(2nd Lieutenant) of "Genio Pionieri" (Pioneer Engineers).
Your example still has the chin strap buttons with specialty symbol, which is why it is a production of the 50s and 60s, since the early 70s were used the buttons of unique type for all specialties.
This cap model was used with the service uniform, while with the field uniform was used the "basco" beret.
