Dear fellows, I wish to share with you some pics of the fighting knife issued by the Regio Esercito to paratroopers, sapper units and other assault troops.
It is commonly known as pugnale M 39, by the date of first issue, but also M 38 (more correctly referred to the transictional model) or "broomhandle".
She strictly derivates from the Austrian sturmesser model 1917, which was issued in large numbers to the Italian troops and Camice Nere between the two wars.
The blade is massive: 209 mm long, 27 mm large and 5 mm thick at the guard. Has an upper false edge, and a sturdy oval shaped cross guard, with a leather washer at the base.
The wooden handle is in two parts, fixed with three rivets that are secured with blackened steel washers.
The scabbard belt loop can be opened, allowing to hook (or remove) the knife without opening the belt.
As stated, this fighting knife was issued to the army assault troops, but also (especially late in the war) to other military branches, such as Camice Nere battalions, navy S. Marco regiment, etc.
Here we have some pictures of Italian SS, Decima MAS and paratroopers personnel proudly bearing the pugnale M 39 at their belts.
