    You're right, it could have been a field repair or replacement. However, keep in mind that A LOT of Italian WWII gear is almost identical to what the Italians used in WWI.

    Compare it with mine Italian ww2 canteen, identical with yours except the replacement leather strap. Also another one without strap and cover.

    Like mine. The plug is pulled out. Removeable plug is W.W.2 I am told. Also pictured is the cup.Rich A. in Pa.
