    Smile Opinions on Italian M33

    Hello,
What are your views on this helmet? Do you feel it is a period WWII example. The shell is stamped BB 38 and the liner has a hallmark. There are no marks at all on the chinstrap bales. There is also a slight very small crack (it looks like it occurred during production) near the front of the helmet.

It appears that there is an Alpini Infantry badge stencil on the very front (I can just make it out). Let me know what you think.

    Regards,
    Jody

I am not an expert on these and I'm not sure how many Mfg's there were and their methods used to make these. But Just a couple of things compared to my M33 stamped B42. My split pins that hold the liner in are just 2 pronged. The buckle has only 1 loop for the strap. Is your chin strap gray? There should be an Italian specialist along to teach us both on these.

    Jody,

It's looking like it has a chance to me but I know these are a minefield to pin down to WWII. "Long after" post war referbs are usually easy to detect (I think they were re-used until the 80's) but there are so many little variations that sometimes make wartime and just after post war hard to tell apart. At least to me. So, it is always possible to have a helmet with 99% war time parts and markings but one small change and it is now a post war referb.

I like the RT marking, I think the double chinstrap loop is OK (but Phil may know better), chinstrap looks the correct grey/green and helmet paint (hard to tell with pictures) look OK as well. I have three tucked away somewhere. Wish I had them in hand. I think at least one of mine has the multi-pronged split pins.

But I happily will pass the baton on to others. I know some but not enough to say with certainty.

I think member Ziomanno might be able to help out. He seems to know his M33's. Maybe you can PM him. Also Ade a while back posted this link. Translation is not all that great but you might find some bits and pieces.

I guess Michael is right Opinions on Italian M33 It looks like there are double loops on these. I guess mine doesn't have it and I have never really spent much time with these to notice.

Here's some snaps of a "sleeper" for comparison ...
This was found in an old chaps wardrobe when he died .... untouched for 70 years ...

Note the paint ...... standard coating just prior to WW2 ...
    Also, the chin strap .....
On the liner stamped into leather was a circle with a Torino maker 1938 ((Or 1936)) .. (First picture, directly in line with the middle of the shot, ..... pick and blow up picture for closer look).

    Thanks Gary,
That is the color of the leather of my liner and also the lack of grommets on the lacing holes. The color looks like Jody's. If you don't mind me asking. I can't make it out,What is the stamp on rear of the rim? Also what type of vent hole/ pins does this one have?

    Phil,
The number stamped on the shell is 9734 ..
I'm afraid I can't help with the vent holes, as I don't now own the helmet .....
