A better picture of the nakago or tang is required. Presently, you have it upside down and sideways. Take good pictures of the tang with the butt down and the sword blade up. Kanji are read from top to bottom. It is a genuine Japanese sword blade.

    Hello Ed,

Although this particular signature happens to be gimei (fake) it will serve to show what's required when photographing the kanji. As Bob says a photo of the entire nakago is also required. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

I think this may be what it should look like. I'm going to post it and then try a visual comparison.

関 藤原義尚 作 (Made by Fujiwara Yoshinao of Seki)

関藤原義尚作 = Seki Fujiwara Yoshinao saku.
An older blade and fittings refitted for military use. The ito wrap looks like leather over wood and the scabbard has a leather combat cover. Possibly done later in the war considering how basic the conversion was.

The gimei signature in post #4 is that of a Tenpō era (1830-1844) swordsmith by the name of Katō Tsunatoshi 加藤綱俊.
