    I like it!
Be patient, some of our other members with more knowledge in this area will be along shortly to tell you more about your original WW II Japanese Officer's Wakizashi.

An arsenal made blade signed Masayuki and dated the 10th month of the 16th year of Showa which is October, 1941

Agree, arsenal blade mounted in what is referred to as Type 98 configuration for use by IJA officers. Although Ralph has mentioned wakizashi I feel it's more likely to be katana length. To clarify that point measure the cutting edge. If over 24" it's katana length. If under 24 (and over 12) it is wakizashi length.

It is a katana. Most are signed on one side of the tang. Why is this one signed on both. I understand your translation Bob, just didn't know what meant what on each of the tang sides. Is one side the makers name and the other side the date is was made?

    Thank you
    Matt

Most arsenal made blades were dated until very late in the war. The two character side is the maker's name and the reverse the date.

To further clarify Stu's comment, measure the length of the sword in a straight line from the point to the notch on the back of the blade that stops the collar/habaki. This is the only accurate method to measure a sword. Even if a sword a very deep curve (and the cutting edge length would be longer) -- the measurement is always taken in a straight line between those two points (tip and back-notch).

    "Nagasa" means length in Japanese.

    Matt,

It is very common for both sides of the tang to be engraved: name on one side, date on the other.

Hi Matt , also you can see an additional mark above the signature on the tang and this is the arsenal showa stamp .
