    Default Japanese Flag

Just acquired this flag. The writing is faded but abundant. Do I have the correct orientation with the red stamping on the upper right side? Can someone tell me what this stamping is and if there is anything written on flag to indicate its service or origin? thanks Joe.

    Hi Joe-san,

Looks like you have a nice Yosegaki Flag !

The red stamp indicates a Shrine stamp.

    三吉大神 - Miyoshi Ookami

The actual name of the Shrine is 太平山三吉神社 - Taiheizann Miyoshi Jinjya.

    It locates in Akita Prefecture.

Interestingly, at the 3:00 o'clock position a man named Yamazawa wrote:

    Akiba Tokyo?
I love Japanese items more and more.
This is very interesting, what does the stamp mean in general? The flag had been in the shrine? Belonged to someone there?

    Thanks

    Cheers

    Hi Nuno,

The stamp means the flag was taken to the Miyoshi shrine to be blessed. Today you can go to shrines and temples and get their stamp on a "passport" type booklet used to collect the stamps. Also, many train stations have a stamp that you can put in a book.

No, Akita City, Akita Prefecture -- It's in the north of Honshu on the Japan Sea side.

    Default some additional closeups

Thank you all for comments; based on the translations I must have gotten the orientation of the flag correct. Here are some close ups of more kanji.
