Just about every Japanese soldier and sailor had at least one flag, sometimes signed by friends and family. These flags were not issue items, they were private purchase, so there is a wide variety of minor variations. These are also the same types of flags anyone in Japan could buy to display on their homes or wave at parades. In the field, Japanese soldiers might tie the flag to their rifles, they could also be tied to a tree, bush, or laid on the ground to mark the position to prevent being attacked by their own aircraft.

The square shape of yours is less common, but as I mentioned, there are many variations. And keep in mind that unlike Germany, the Japanese flag hasn't changed, so not every Japanese flag you find is pre-1945. The style of tabs sometimes helps a bit with dating wartime/pre-war flags.
