A Japanese short sword is called a wakizashi, and the tang appears to be unsigned. I don't know why there are so many holes in the tang normally there are only one or two for the mekugi (peg) to hold the tsuka (handle) in place. I am sure someone else will be along soon to give further info.
Hello Tony,
My guesstimation of this item is that it is a Japanese tanto that someone has installed a bolster and knife handles on to. You can see that the brass bolster has three brass pins. The handle slabs have come off leaving the new attachment pins and traces of glue still there.
Unfortunate, as this was originally probably a nice tanto.
Ralph.

This blade is basically in relic condition. A non Japanese evidently made this into a hunting knife at some point. The blade shape is also damaged as the contour is poorly shaped about 1/3 from the point due to sharpening. The tang has also been butchered by the uninformed. This reminds me of a similar blade I saw as a child that a man was keeping in the trunk of his car to clean fish with. There is no collector future for this piece. Only consider taking it if the price is close to free.
