    I don't know if it is coincidence or not, but that number is a Michigan-issued Social Security number.

    It's not unusual to find social security and/or service numbers on war prizes. That way, it is always marked to him, made it harder for someone in the field to steal it. If you run down the address you may just find the G.I. who brought it back.
