Letter opener? I've got a US Army saber letter opener similar to that.

I don't think that's what this is. I read an article about the child's miniatures that the Japanese made during the war.
I'm not 100% that this is what this sword is... but I don't think it's modern.

Ray skin handle, silver wire winding, nickel plating and lots of details witch indicates it's a quality item.

I was impressed how well it was made. The blade is even of the quality I would expect in a normal sword.
