It looks like it COULD be either yuzai or Kozai

    ユザイ yuzai
Kozai

yuzai could be an oil-based medicine.
    油剤 【ゆざい】 (n) oil-based (or greasy) medicine

    Kozai could be a surname:

    古佐井 (こざい) Kozai [place]
Kozai [surname]
Kozai [surname]
Kozai [surname]
Kozai [surname]
Kozai [surname]
Kozai [surname]

Thank you both for trying, even though many see this as just another canteen it will be a highly sacred and treasured part of my collection.

Nice example and complete of Japanese Imperial Army model. I have had a few in the years some always seem to be missing the cork or stopper. Probaly due to it could easily be lost by playing vet kids. timothy
