    Hi All,
Picked up my first Japanese canteen, it is a very good example, it has the been there look and still retains almost all of the original paint, the straps are worn, dirty, stained and the Kanji on the front is faded, although the Kanji on the canteen itself is still visable I am not sure if it can be translated at all, I provided a pic of the maker mark as well, any info would be appreciated, I think it was a good deal for under 60 US dollars

That is katakana (a syllabary) and spells out ウモト "Umoto"

These are the possible kanji for Umoto:

    宇元 (うもと) Umoto [surname]
    宇本 (うもと) Umoto [surname]
    卯元 (うもと) Umoto [surname]
    卯本 (うもと) Umoto [surname]
    鵜本 (うもと) Umoto [surname]
    兎本 (うもと) Umoto [surname]
    菟本 (うもと) Umoto [surname]
    夘本 (うもと) Umoto [surname]
    禹本 (うもと) Umoto [surname]
    莵本 (うもと) Umoto [surname]

Thank you guy, so the soldiers last name was Umoto, that is very interesting!

Glad to help, Maximus. By the way, "Umoto" is pronounced "ooh-mowtoe"; not "you-mowtoe" or "youmow-toe" (standard English readings ... kinda like "sam-you-rye" or "sam-a-rye" for sa-mu-rai).

    Hi John,

    That's a nice canteen, congratulations!

The third photo is upside down, and it is dated 1942 ( 昭和十七 - Shouwa Jyuu-nana).

    Cheers!

Thank you Taka, I figured I had a 50 50 chance of the maker mark being right side up! lol

    Question

I know this may be impossible but I tried to take some good close up photo's of the faded Kanji on the front strap, anybody want to take a shot at it? or is it too far gone? just figured I would give it a chance...
