Need Help with silk Banner

I was wondering what this was used for; I think it was for cerebrating when some one joined the army.Also if any one could translate it, that would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Funny you should mention that -- I thought it was cut down too -- at the very base where it is stitched, it looks like the top edge of some kanji that was cut off.

I have heard these referred to as nobori, which is the Japanese word for banner I am told. Really just a long vertical flag of sorts. Perhaps Guy can confirm that for us. Most I've seen are 2 or more metres in length but some were over 3 metres and difficult to display unless outside on a pole.

Yes, "nobori" means streamer or banner [actually, "banner" is Hata] -- still, what we'd call a banner. It can be either vertical or horizontal.

Yes it looks to have been cut down to keep the fringe and enable it to be displayed in a frame , i think it looks good Chris
