New sword today from family of a parachute regiment vetran who was in Japan at end of hostilities his name was Sgt Robert Hardy who apparently saw action at Arnhem in 1944.He bought this home and sat in a trunk in the loft for many years. One real fault a couple of small nicks from blade other than that fantastic Hamon.

A nice piece of history from a well travelled soldier . The sword has been stamped by the Seki arsenal and has the signature Sukemitsu . Is there any kanji on the reverse side of the tang , if so , could you please post a picture oriented with the sword tip to the top and the tang to the bottom , thanks .

If these markings are in paint , they are probably just production marks made in the factory .

By the way , your sword is a type 98 Officers Shin Gunto and not a type 95 NCO example , i have edited the thread title to suit .

As i said previously these painted markings are marks made during production in the factory . As far as keeping it is concerned it depends entirely on what you are looking for in your collection ! It is certainly a good WW2 factory manufactured standard IJA Officers sword and with its provenance , i like it

Can't determine the first character (my guess would be a 5 if perhaps some of the paint has rubbed off) but the three that follow are 7 - 9 - 8.
