We are the Pilgrims , master, we shall go
Always a little further : it may be
Beyond that last blue mountain barred with snow
Across that angry or that glimmering sea...

    Alan,

This is a very busy flag so I have a request. Can you do a closeup of each quadrant? The photos now only show smaller sections and the part around 10-11 o'clock seems to be missing. In other words, it's hard for me to get a comprehensive feel for the very small sections and other sections missing.

    Sorry to be difficult.

    Tom

    Alan,

Here is the result of my effort. This one put me through the wringer more than most.

(Four vertical characters along right edge) Eternal Good Fortune in War

(Four vertical characters parallel and slightly below) SAITO Ichiro (Family names in caps; given names first letter only capitalized.)

(Rest will be oriented to the clock starting at 0030 - Unreadable)

    (0100) Military (rest unreadable)

    Wipe out the enemy

    (name unreadable)

(0200) Loyal Heroism, (lower smaller characters unreadable)

Ichigo's (first character hard to read but Ichi is the best guess; may be the name of a place or person) protective mother

(0245) Strike them hard (believe that is the meaning although it contained some local dialect) - SAITO Sawako

(0300-0330 - Vertical writing starting just to the side of the meatball and going across the stitched tear) Praying for good military fortune over the atrocity committing America and Britain Ikuko

(smaller writing below the above vertical characters and along the sewn tear are unreadable)

(0400-0415) Believe in certain victory - Masato

    Charge forward bravely Sumiko

(0430) Kuroshio (Black ocean current or name of an area) SATO Kiyoshi

(0500) (On the occasion of) the start of your voluntary service life - ITAGAKI

    (0530) Advance Japan Masato

    Go with determination -SAITO Kikui

    (0600) Banzai

    (unreadable)

(0645) Achieve certain victory SAITO Hachiro

(0700) Display a Fighting Spirit -Village Mayor SAKAMOTO

    (0730 0945 unreadable)

(0950) Achieve certain victory - (first character unreadable) ....KURA Isamu

(1000 - These are the lyrics of a military song written in1937 to elevate the desire to go into battle. Although it was played prior to radio news of the successful attack on Pearl Harbor, subsequently it was played exclusively prior to Imperial Army Headquarters news announcements of honorable defeats where everyone died doing their honorable duty. This song was considered second only to the national anthem during the war but went into limbo after the surrender. The lyrics, however, do provide an insight into the Japanese mindset during the war. It took me a while to find the lyrics rewritten from the archaic literary style into present day Japanese; otherwise I might not have been able to come up with a translation.)

If I go to fight on the ocean, I might drown in the water
If I go to fight on land, I might die covered with grass
But I want to die for the Emperor and will have no regrets
    no matter how I die

    TAKAFUJI Hatsuo

    (1130) Persevere - Tariko

(1200) Praying for Victory - Yunko

Hope you can track my input.

    Tom
