    Alan,

Here is the remainder of my translation on the tray:

    (Tray front brown placard)
    Comrades

It is not surprising that the unequaled vital military service you compiled is today's pleasant memory.

(Three characters on left inside of fan-shape) A bright country (significance unknown)

(Lower left inside of cherry blossom silhouette) Memento

(Tray rear) Yongsan 79th Infantry Regiment
Moriyama (probably the name of the tray's presenter)

For historical background: 79th Infantry Regiment History

After Japan annexed Korea (1910), the 79th Infantry Regiment was formed and stationed in the Yongsan area of Seoul as part of the 20th Division for pacification of the Korean peninsula and contingencies on the Asian mainland.

Apr 1916 - Regimental colors presented
Sep 1919 - Dispatched to suppress bandits in the China border area

Dec 1925 - Dispatched to Mukden, China as part of a combined force to maintain order in
    Southern Manchuria

May 1927 - Part of the regiment dispatched to Manchuria for the China Affair

Sep 1931 - Part of the regiment dispatched to Mukden's Qiqihar for the Manchurian Incident

Jul 1937 - Mobilized as a reaction force for the sudden outbreak of the Northern China Incident with Regimental colors to Tsientsin and
operated in Shanxi and Hebei Provinces. During this period received commendations from the Army Commander for actions
    during three different operations.

Jan 1940 - Returned to Yongsan

Jul 1941 - Ordered to participate in special maneuvers

Jan 1943 - Due to operational changes in the Southern Sector, moved to the eastern front of New Guinea as part of the 20th Division.
During this time, the Regiment's 9th Company received a commendation for its night attack on enemy positions in
Kateu (phonetic) and its 10th company for its reverse landing on Anto (phonetic) peninsula.

Aug 1945 - The curtain fell on the Regiment's history upon receipt of the Surrender Proclamation on New Guinea's Monbukku (phonetic)
Mountain. The slightly more than 100 surviving officers and men burned the crowned in glory regimental colors
shamelessly shedding tears of indignation. (Of the 25,000 men of the 20th Division, only 1,711 survived with more casualties
coming from disease and malnutrition than combat and this Regiment was no exception.)

On 17 April 1962, the Osaka Mobilization office erected a monument in its affiliated Osaka Gokoku Jinja (Nation Protection Shrine) to the souls of the over 7,500 Regiment's men who died in service during the 39 years of its existence.

The new one has distinct writing and is not very crowded. Will get to it later next week.

    Tom

    0315 One-man human wave NAGAOKA

    0330 Strength (rest faded)

0500 Strongly maintain the spirit of defending the Emperor SUGA (2nd character unreadable)

    0600 Sincerity Chiyoko (Woman's name)

0700 Selfless patriotic service (first character unreadable) I

0800- Thrust forward KAWA (2nd character unreadable)

    0900 Single-minded dedication OTA

1000 Loyalty IBARANO (not sure of this name)

    1100 Always faithful SUGAI Ken

That should do it for this one, I won't get to the other for about ten days after I get out of the hospital. Wish me luck,
