Gentleman I want to thank you all for the assistance you have given on the first two swords that I've posted.

The info that was provided on the Type 3 sword was above and beyond. I can not express my thanks enough.

There will be 2 more swords that I will be posting as soon as I have the photos.

A messed with sword. The handle is likely not original to this factory blade as the tang has been cut-off to accomidate it. A cut off tang is not something one would expect to find a a WW2 sword. One of the seppa by the tsuba is also missing likely for the same reason.

Thanks for making the link between these two swords Guy. Interesting to compare. This one is signed on the opposite side of the nakago although the file marks go in the same direction (slanted downward from back to front) on both. It would take someone more experienced than me to determine if the same hand signed both but I'm not sure that is the case.

Who'd cut the "saku" off a nice blade, it's a shame. if the blade is gendaito it might be worth getting a shira saya for it and using the koshirae for parts. My feeling is this is probably a post war parts "fix". During the war they would have had access to handle makers and smiths who would have done a proper job and not left the handle a sepia short and the nakago looking like it was butchered. The shape of the end of the tang is part of an individual smith's identification. Different schools, different shaped tang ends. This is just disrespectful.

On the other hand if it's not gendaito I've spent way too much time being outraged .

Elements of both the OP's sword, and the one on WAF, bear some similarities in the second kanji 光 (light):


However, I'm not a handwriting specialist. Just food for thought.

I was flipping back and forth to get a sense, having them side by side really helps! I see what you mean. It's possible too in the passage of time that a signature might evolve, I wouldn't presume to judge but they do look more similar to me now.
