I'd check Ebay - you might find an identical piece. The 'worm holes'
in the grip threw me at first as well, because we know this is seen
on antique furniture as a sign of age.
It's worth what you paid - but some Japanese repros
are priced at $100+........

Whatever it is, it is not Japanese. As others have said, it may be a fantasy design attempting to be a Japanese sword.
